次の文を読んで下の問に答えなさい。
Progeria is an extremely rare genetic disease that accelerates the physical aging process to about seven times the normal rate. Because of this accelerated aging, a child of ten will have the same respiratory, cardiovascular, and arthritic conditions as a 70-year-old would. It is said to (A) affect young children aged about 2 of both sexes and all races. Because of its rare nature, no definitive cause can be pinpointed so far, so currently there is no cure for this disease. Progeria is estimated to affect 1 in 4 million young children. There are now thirty to forty known cases worldwide of progeria. Children of all races and cultures from around the world have been affected. Some physical features of progeria children include dwarfism, wrinkled skin, and baldness. The physical aging speed from this disease is very high but its mental growth is equivalent ( B ) that of other children of the same age. Most children with progeria live no longer than their early teenage years, though one or two have lived to be as old as 20 or 21. How scary!
By the way, do you know about a book by Alvin Toffler titled “The Third Wave?” It came out 19 years ago. As you might know, the first wave of transformation began in the days of agriculture. The second wave came in the 18th century, when the Industrial Revolution occurred. And the third wave, based not on machine engines but on mind, would begin in the 21st century. It is what we call the information age. The third wave is likely to stop a small number of people engaging in mass media governing culture. The present broadcast would give ( C ) to the narrowcast.
Those days we felt the story was interesting but that he might have illusions about the future. Now as we have seen an exponential headway in the field of the information technology, the Internet offers us (D) a range of information, tools and resources. We can also share our experiences ( E ) others around the world as Alvin Toffler pointed out. Presumably whether we are in full command of the net or not can lead to making or breaking our future. It could be dubbed digital divide. Conceivably life without the Internet accelerates the mental aging process more than progeria accelerates the physical aging process. What it comes down to is progeria refers to a physical disease, and, as it were, the digital divide a mental disease in the present society.
